Buendía and Watkins fire Villa to landmark win on Tyneside

Aston Villa produced a composed and authoritative display to beat Newcastle United 2–0 at St James’ Park, ending a 21-year wait for a league victory on Tyneside and moving level on points with Manchester City in second place.

The breakthrough came in the 19th minute when Emi Buendía curled a magnificent effort from outside the box into the far corner, leaving Nick Pope rooted to the spot. The goal capped a strong opening spell in which Morgan Rogers and Ollie Watkins repeatedly stretched the Newcastle defence with their movement and pace.

Newcastle had early chances of their own. Sandro Tonali was denied inside the first minute by Emiliano Martínez, who went on to mark his 200th Premier League appearance with another outstanding save to claw away Lewis Miley’s looping header before the break. Despite spells of pressure, the hosts struggled to find rhythm without their key leader Bruno Guimarães, whose absence has now coincided with 11 Premier League matches without a win for Newcastle.

A major turning point arrived early in the second half when Joelinton was forced off with a groin injury, disrupting Eddie Howe’s midfield structure. His replacement, former Villa player Jacob Ramsey, was unable to shift the momentum as Villa continued to manage the game intelligently.

The visitors sealed the contest in the 88th minute. After Newcastle failed to clear their lines, Ollie Watkins rose to guide a header past Pope from close range, with the assist credited to Matty Cash following a set-piece phase involving Lucas Digne. The goal sparked wild celebrations in the away end and underlined Watkins’ growing importance in big matches.

Afterwards, Ollie Watkins said: “We didn’t play in front of them, we played behind them. They didn’t deal with it — they didn’t prepare for that.” Unai Emery, meanwhile, praised Martínez’s influence, calling his goalkeeper “extraordinary” on a night when Villa combined defensive discipline with attacking flair.

For Newcastle, the defeat ended a 17-game home unbeaten run against Villa and highlighted once more how difficult life can be without their midfield leader Bruno. For Aston Villa, it was a result loaded with significance — defined by Buendía’s moment of brilliance and Watkins’ decisive header, and one that keeps their title ambitions firmly alive.
