Chelsea survive Naples scare to seal knockout place
Chelsea sealed their place in the UEFA Champions League last 16 with a dramatic 3-2 comeback win over Napoli at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, with João Pedro scoring twice in a thrilling second half. Liam Rosenior’s side had trailed at the break but responded with composure, clinical finishing and the decisive influence of Cole Palmer off the bench.
The victory lifted Chelsea into sixth place in the league phase, meaning they avoided the play-offs and progressed directly into the knockout rounds. It was also their first away win in the competition since October 2022.
Napoli, needing victory to stay alive in Europe, began with urgency and intensity, but it was Chelsea who struck first through the spot-kick, before the hosts responded with two outstanding goals of their own to turn the match around before half-time.

The winner arrived eight minutes from time. Palmer slid a perfectly weighted through-ball between Napoli’s centre-backs, and João Pedro raced clear before finishing emphatically past Alex Meret to complete his brace. Palmer became the first Chelsea player to provide two assists for the same teammate in a Champions League match since Didier Drogba in 2011.
The double also made João Pedro the first Chelsea player to score twice in a Champions League game since 2021, underlining the scale of his impact on the night.
Napoli pushed desperately for an equaliser, with Robert Sánchez denying Romelu Lukaku late on, but Chelsea held firm to secure a famous away victory and confirm their place among Europe’s last 16.
After the match, Rosenior praised his side’s response, saying: “The character of the players in the second half was outstanding. We corrected things at half-time and the reaction was exactly what I wanted.” He added that avoiding the play-offs was “massive for us with the mental schedule we’ve had”.
For Chelsea, the comeback silenced doubts about their consistency on the road and showcased their growing resilience in Europe. For Napoli, elimination at home marked a bitter end to their continental campaign, despite a vibrant first-half display.
