Anthony Joshua Released from Duchess International Hospital After Tragic Nigerian Car Crash

Anthony Joshua discharged from hospital

Anthony Joshua, the British heavyweight boxing champion, has been released from Duchess International Hospital in Ikoyi, Lagos, following a serious car accident on the Lagos‑Ibadan Expressway. The crash tragically killed two of Joshua’s close associates: strength and conditioning coach Sina Ghami and trainer Latif “Latz” Ayodele. Joshua sustained only minor injuries and was under medical observation before being cleared to continue recovery at home.

Local authorities confirmed that Joshua left the hospital late on Wednesday, deemed clinically fit to recuperate at home. Following his discharge, he reportedly visited the funeral arrangements for his late team members alongside his mother, paying respects to his friends who had played a pivotal role in his career.

Preliminary investigations by TRACE revealed that the Lexus SUV in which Joshua was a passenger lost control due to a tyre burst, which may have been caused by excessive speed. The vehicle collided with a stationary truck, resulting in the tragic deaths. This incident has reignited discussions on road safety in Nigeria and the need for stricter traffic regulations.

Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Ghami and Ayodele, describing them as “dedicated, loyal, and passionate” members of Joshua’s team. Condolences poured in from the global boxing community, acknowledging the profound impact the two men had on the sport and on Joshua personally.

The former world champion had been in Nigeria following a recent high-profile victory in Miami and was reportedly preparing for upcoming bouts in 2026. The accident is expected to have an emotional influence on his immediate sporting plans, though Joshua remains committed to his boxing career.
