Seven changes backfire as Chelsea stumble early
Chelsea entered the match after an exhausting midweek trip to Naples, and Liam Rosenior rotated heavily, making seven changes to his starting XI. The reshuffle disrupted rhythm and cohesion, and the hosts struggled badly in the opening stages.
Matters worsened when Jamie Gittens was forced off injured midway through the first half, further unsettling Chelsea’s shape. West Ham seized the initiative and capitalised ruthlessly on their dominance.
Bowen and Summerville punish sloppy Chelsea
The visitors struck first in the 7th minute when Jarrod Bowen delivered a dangerous cross from the right that drifted past everyone, including the goalkeeper, and rolled into the far corner.
Chelsea failed to respond, and West Ham doubled their lead in the 36th minute. Bowen again sparked the move, finding Aaron Wan-Bissaka, whose low cut-back was swept first time into the top corner by Crysencio Summerville. The boos that greeted the half-time whistle underlined Chelsea’s dismal opening 45 minutes.
Triple substitution transforms the contest
Rosenior reacted decisively at the break, introducing João Pedro, Marc Cucurella, and Wesley Fofana. The impact was immediate as Chelsea pushed West Ham deeper and began to dominate territory and possession.
“It wasn’t about tactics, it was about personality and character,” Rosenior later said. “The players showed fight, spirit and belief in the second half.”
João Pedro sparks belief with first goal
Chelsea finally broke through in the 57th minute when a teasing cross found João Pedro, who glanced a close-range header beyond the goalkeeper to reduce the deficit. Stamford Bridge came alive as momentum swung sharply towards the hosts.
Cucurella levels after goalmouth scramble
Pressure continued to mount, and in the 70th minute, Liam Delap struck the crossbar from close range. The rebound fell kindly to Marc Cucurella, who dived forward to head home the equaliser and complete Chelsea’s rapid comeback.
Fernández delivers the knockout blow
West Ham nearly regained the lead late on but failed to convert a golden chance. They were made to pay in stoppage time when João Pedro cut the ball back into the box and Enzo Fernández arrived unmarked to hammer the ball beyond Areola for a dramatic winner in the 92nd minute.
“From two-nil down, this is devastating,” admitted West Ham boss Nuno Espírito Santo. “We controlled the first half, but we defended badly after the break.”
Todibo sent off as tempers flare
Deep into added time, West Ham defender Jean-Clair Todibo was shown a red card after grabbing João Pedro by the throat, sparking chaotic scenes and sealing a miserable ending for the visitors.
Chelsea’s dramatic revival sent them back into the top four and underlined the growing impact of Rosenior’s in-game management, while West Ham were left to rue a second-half collapse after controlling the contest for an hour.
