Chelsea Football Club has urged travelling supporters to exercise “extreme caution” in Italy after two fans were hospitalised following an incident in Naples on Tuesday night. The warning comes as the Blues prepare for a pivotal Champions League showdown against Napoli at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium.
The West London club confirmed that the injured supporters are receiving treatment for non-life-threatening injuries. In an official statement, a club spokesperson said: “The club is aware of an incident that took place on Tuesday evening in Naples. Two fans are being treated in hospital… The club would like to remind all supporters to exercise extreme caution whilst in the city.”
High Stakes and High Tensions
The atmosphere in Naples is notoriously volatile for visiting fans, a factor Chelsea had anticipated. Prior to the trip, the club’s travel advisory warned that “attacks on away fans have sometimes occurred in Naples” during UEFA competitions. To mitigate risks, a dedicated shuttle bus service has been organised for the 2,500-strong travelling contingent.
The tension on the streets mirrors the high stakes on the pitch. This final round of the league phase is a “must-win” scenario for both sides for very different reasons:
- Chelsea are fighting to secure a top-eight finish to bypass the play-off round and head straight into the last 16.
- Napoli find themselves in a precarious 25th position, desperate for points to avoid a premature exit from the competition.
Sterling Exit Looming
While safety remains the immediate priority in Italy, back at Stamford Bridge, the January transfer window is reaching a crescendo. Raheem Sterling is widely expected to end his tenure with the Blues before the window shuts on Friday. The winger’s anticipated departure marks a significant shift in Chelsea’s attacking options as they navigate the business end of the season.
As the 20:00 GMT kick-off approaches, the focus remains split between the action on the grass and the safety of those in the stands. Chelsea fans have been advised to stick strictly to the club’s official guidance and avoid moving through the city in small, isolated groups.
