Arsenal came into the match having won 67 per cent of their Premier League meetings against United under Mikel Arteta and chasing a fifth straight home league victory over the Red Devils. They started sharply, dominating possession and forcing United into a deep defensive block before taking the lead on 29 minutes when Lisandro Martínez diverted Martin Ødegaard’s volley into his own net.
United found a route back into the contest eight minutes later thanks to a costly error from Martin Zubimendi. The Spaniard’s loose pass sent Bryan Mbeumo clean through on goal and the United striker showed admirable composure to round David Raya and roll the ball into the empty net for his landmark 50th Premier League goal.
That equaliser shifted the momentum. After the interval, United emerged with renewed confidence and were rewarded on 50 minutes when Patrick Dorgu exchanged crisp passes with Bruno Fernandes before unleashing a thunderous 20-yard drive that crashed in off the underside of the crossbar. It was United’s second shot on target — and their second goal — underlining their ruthless efficiency on the night.
Despite trailing, Arsenal continued to probe and piled on late pressure. Their persistence finally paid off on 84 minutes when substitute Mikel Merino bundled the ball over the line from close range after another dangerous Bukayo Saka corner, extending Arsenal’s run as the league’s most prolific set-piece scorers.
Just as the home crowd sensed a dramatic turnaround, United struck back with devastating effect. Three minutes later, Matheus Cunha collected possession 25 yards from goal and bent a sublime right-footed effort into the bottom corner, stunning the Emirates and sealing United’s first away league win at Arsenal since 2017.
Former United defender Gary Neville described the result as “a shockwave through the Premier League”, adding: “An incredible match and a sobering day for Arsenal. They’ve still got a four-point lead, but there will be questions after that today.”
United captain Harry Maguire, named man of the match, praised his side’s resilience: “To have a late setback and still get the win… it’s a magnificent performance. Michael’s brought fresh energy and galvanised the group. Two tough games, two wins — that’s massive for us.”
The result means Arsenal suffer their first home league defeat of the season and see their advantage at the summit reduced to four points, while United climb into fourth place. Carrick has now overseen victories over both Manchester City and Arsenal in his opening two matches in charge, marking one of the most impressive caretaker starts in Premier League history.
