Man City 2-0 Galatasaray: Haaland drought ends as Cherki strike seals last-16 place

Manchester City booked their place in the Champions League last 16 with a composed 2-0 victory over Galatasaray at the Etihad Stadium, as Erling Haaland and Rayan Cherki both netted in a dominant first-half display — before late drama elsewhere confirmed their progress.

City knew victory alone would not guarantee a top-eight finish, but Pep Guardiola’s side took care of business early, playing with tempo and authority against a Galatasaray team that struggled to escape sustained pressure.

The breakthrough came in the 11th minute when Erling Haaland ended a difficult run in front of goal — scoring for only the second time in eight matches — by racing onto Jeremy Doku’s defence-splitting pass and delicately lifting the ball over Ugurcan Cakir. It was the striker’s first from open play in several outings and a moment of visible release inside the stadium.

City doubled their advantage before the half-hour mark after another electric contribution from Doku, who skipped beyond his marker and cut the ball back for Rayan Cherki, the Frenchman guiding a precise finish into the bottom corner for his eighth goal of the campaign in all competitions.

Galatasaray rarely threatened in response, with Victor Osimhen’s best effort comfortably gathered by Gianluigi Donnarumma, while City continued to probe through Bernardo Silva and Nico O’Reilly. The only sour note for Guardiola was Doku’s withdrawal with a calf issue midway through the first half.

After the interval, City managed the contest with control rather than urgency, content to retain possession and deny Galatasaray any meaningful route back into the game. Omar Marmoush went closest to extending the lead, only to see his low strike saved, while Phil Foden and Tijjani Reijnders helped steady the midfield in the closing stages.

Yet the biggest tension arrived after the final whistle. City’s automatic qualification depended on results elsewhere — and it was Benfica’s dramatic late victory over Real Madrid, masterminded by José Mourinho, that lifted Guardiola’s side into eighth place and out of February’s play-off round.

“We didn’t know Benfica needed a goal, so when their goalkeeper went up we were asking, ‘Why you go?’” Guardiola smiled. “But it was a good strategy for José — and very good for us.”

The night also carried personal significance for City’s manager, marking his 400th win in his 569th match in charge of the club — another landmark in an era defined by sustained excellence.

Cherki, named Player of the Match, said: “We’re really proud because Galatasaray are a very good team. We had a good game, we won — now we wait for the scores.”

For City, the evening delivered both momentum and relief. Haaland rediscovered his scoring touch, Cherki continued his rapid rise in influence, and Guardiola’s side gained precious breathing space in the calendar ahead of the knockout phase in March.
