Manchester United are finalising the appointment of Michael Carrick as interim manager until the end of the season, with agreement reached in principle and contractual details being completed. Carrick is expected to begin work at Carrington immediately ahead of the Manchester derby at Old Trafford.

Discussions over the composition of his backroom team are at an advanced stage. Former England assistant Steve Holland is expected to become his No 2, providing extensive international and elite-level experience. Jonathan Woodgate remains among the candidates for a supporting role, while further appointments are being considered as the structure of the new coaching unit is shaped.

Carrick’s return marks his second spell in charge, having previously overseen a brief caretaker period in 2021. His coaching model is associated with a 4-2-3-1 system, an assertive press and a balance between controlled build-up and fast attacking transitions. His personality and practical coaching style have been well regarded by senior players from his earlier time at the club.

The decision follows a difficult week for United. The team were eliminated from the FA Cup in a 1–2 defeat to Brighton. The visitors went 2–0 ahead through goals from Adrian Gruda and Danny Welbeck, before Benjamin Šeško pulled one back for United in the 85th minute. The squad had been given a scheduled day off before regrouping to prepare for the change in leadership.

Carrick will immediately face a demanding schedule. His first game is the Manchester derby, followed by a trip to face league leaders Arsenal on 25 January. With United already out of both domestic cups and absent from European competition, this campaign is set to consist of just 40 matches in total, the club’s shortest season since 1914–15.

The former midfielder arrives with notable support from figures around the club and from ex-teammates. One leading striker has previously said: “Michael Carrick was a class act as a player and he can become a great coach as well.” The task ahead is to stabilise performances, re-energise the squad and impose clarity of style during the decisive final months of the season.
