Yoane Wissa — 8’ — Newcastle United
Anthony Gordon — 30’ — Newcastle United
Harvey Barnes — 65’ — Newcastle United
Newcastle United moved into the Champions League top eight with a convincing 3-0 victory over PSV Eindhoven, putting their qualification fate in their own hands ahead of a decisive trip to Paris Saint-Germain.
The hosts made a blistering start, pressing aggressively and forcing early errors from the Dutch champions. That pressure was rewarded when Yoane Wissa, 8’ opened the scoring on his first Champions League start, finishing calmly after Bruno Guimarães and Joelinton combined to carve open the PSV defence.
Newcastle doubled their advantage just before the half-hour mark, again punishing sloppy buildup play. Anthony Gordon, 30’ tapped into an empty net after Wissa intercepted a loose backpass, continuing his impressive European scoring run this season.
The Magpies remained in full control after the interval and wrapped up the points through a moment of individual quality. Collecting the ball outside the box, Harvey Barnes, 65’ surged past two defenders and slotted low into the corner to seal a dominant victory.
Injury Concern for Guimarães as Newcastle Cruise
Despite the emphatic scoreline, the night was slightly dampened when captain Bruno Guimarães was forced off late in the first half with an ankle problem. Lewis Miley replaced him in stoppage time (45+4’), while the armband was initially passed to Kieran Trippier. Only later, when Trippier was substituted on 86’, did Miley take over the captaincy.
Manager Eddie Howe said after the match:
“Really good performance from us. A difficult opponent tactically, they’re tough to play against. We were rewarded with some really good goals and it was a really good night for Yoane Wissa. But now it’s one step at a time — Aston Villa first. The Premier League is so important and that’s a really tough game.”
Wissa, who also assisted Gordon’s goal, reflected on a landmark evening:
“It was a special night for me — scoring and assisting. They were tricky opponents, but we pressed them well and took our chances. Now we focus on Sunday and then Paris.”
Table Picture and What Comes Next
The result lifts Newcastle into seventh place, level on goal difference with Paris Saint-Germain but behind them on goals scored. Eddie Howe’s side are guaranteed at least a play-off place but can secure automatic qualification for the last 16 with a positive result in Paris.
Before that, attention turns back to domestic matters, with Aston Villa visiting St James’ Park in a crucial Premier League fixture.
