PSG Ordered to Pay Mbappé €60 Million in Salary Dispute

Mbappe

A French court has ruled that Paris Saint-Germain must pay former striker Kylian Mbappé €60 million (£52.5m) in unpaid salary and bonuses. The ruling comes after a long-running contract dispute that saw Mbappé seeking €263 million (£231.5m) from PSG.

Mbappé, now 26 and playing for Real Madrid, claimed unpaid wages for three months between April and June 2024, along with a contractual ethics bonus and a signing bonus. PSG had been counter-suing for €240 million (£211m), related to Mbappé’s failed 2023 transfer to Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal.

Despite the court awarding only a fraction of the amount sought, Mbappé’s lawyer, Frederique Cassereau, stated the ruling was satisfactory, noting the unpaid salaries as the primary issue.

Analysis

The decision highlights several key points in modern football:

  1. Contract enforcement – Even elite clubs like PSG can be held accountable for unpaid wages and contractual breaches.
  2. Transfer implications – The ruling indirectly underscores complications surrounding high-profile transfers, such as Mbappé’s rejected move to Al-Hilal in 2023.
  3. Financial and reputational impact – While PSG avoids paying the full claimed amount, the case reinforces scrutiny on club management, player treatment, and compliance with labour regulations.

Mbappé’s free transfer to Real Madrid the following summer marked the end of his contentious spell at PSG, but the court’s decision ensures the striker receives significant financial redress from his former club.
